Many internet marketers will work hard at driving traffic to their site to generate good quality leads. But what happens when those valuable leads fail to convert into sales, what is the next course of action you should take?

The next step for many online marketers is to send follow up emails to get more information to these new prospects, of course this method can go one of two ways, your leads will either find your emails informative and continue to want information from you, or if they feel that it is no longer useful or relevant to their first search then they will probably unsubscribe from your mailing list.

There will always be a certain percentage of people who will unsubscribe from your list quite early on, sometimes for different reasons, it could be the simple fact they are just getting too many emails from you and other marketers. So before you lose the interest of a potential customer, is there another step you can take to make a sale?

More experienced marketers will of course pick up the phone and call their leads, if they have already collected a name, email address, plus that valuable telephone number then they will not hesitate to make the call that could make all the difference in getting a sale. But for many new marketers the thought of making sales calls can be one of the biggest hurdles to get over. After all if you’ve just started an online business, your first priority has probably been to generate as much traffic as possible to your business opportunity, making sales has probably taken a back seat ,when in fact this is the most important task you will need to master for your business to be successful and the reason you are generating traffic in the first place.

Many people who start an internet home business will have come from varied working backgrounds, as this might not be sales related then learning how to make calls to prospects can be one of the hardest skills to develop and master, as well as being the one that will terrify many and take them completely out of their comfort zone.

So do you really need to make sales calls if you want a successful online business?

Well if you are fortunate enough to be generating a massive amount of traffic that is producing good quality leads, then do you really need to make sales calls? The big question you need to ask yourself is this, “Are these leads converting in to sales?” If they are not, then you should seriously think about learning how to close sales on the phone. So how can you develop the skill of making sales calls? The simple answer is to pick up the phone and start to make calls. The more you practise, as with developing any new skills the easier it will get. Making those first calls will be difficult and possibly a nerve racking experience for many ,but unless you take that first step you will never know what a positive difference this can make to your business. Although perfecting the art of closing sales on the phone is another complex topic that deserves another article, but in simplified terms, to get good results you will need to be as relaxed and friendly as possible. It is always better to let your own personality come through when calling prospects rather than reading from a script, not only will it probably sound very false but you will need to build a rapport with your prospect that a script will not allow you to do.

Always remember that if your lead has been happy to give you their contact information when they first visited your site, then it is very unlikely you will meet with too much hostility when you first call them. After all, in effect they invited you to call, so the experience should be a lot different than a cold call to a person that hasn‘t asked for information. To help you feel more relaxed when making the call, remember your lead has given you permission to phone, so as long as you have called at a reasonable time, if you have been polite, as well as clear about the purpose of your call, then it should be a positive experience for both of you. It is always a good idea to ask at the beginning of the call if it’s a good time to speak, if not then set a time and day to call back that is suitable for both of you. With time you will develop your own style and once you have honed your telephone calling skills, this should be very effective in making sales and the future success of your home business.
